Lateral Work Clinic – Building Understanding from the Ground Up

Margaret River-Metricup WA.

February 7-8 2026

Join us for a weekend dedicated to developing clarity, awareness, and confidence in lateral work, by deepening your understanding of both the rider’s influence and the horse’s readiness.

This clinic focuses on the basics done well - refining subtle aids, improving harmony, and creating movement that feels effortless for both horse and rider.

Day One – The Rider’s Role

Day one is dedicated to the seat of the rider and how it influences lateral movement.

We will explore:

• Pelvic positioning and the role of the seat bones

• Alignment of the torso, head, thighs, and lower leg

• Understanding contact in lateral work

• How much the hand influences the movement versus how it guides, softens, and releases through the tongue and jaw

By developing awareness of these subtle cues, the rider learns how to set the horse up for success, allowing the movement to flow without bracing or resistance. The goal is to move with the horse, not against the natural rhythm of the gait.

Day Two – The Horse’s Perspective

Day two shifts the focus to the horse’s understanding and physical capability.

We will cover:

• Which lateral movements your horse is ready for

• The criteria required before progressing to each exercise

• What each movement asks of the horse physically and mentally

• Individual assessment of each horse’s needs and training stage

This day is about learning to recognize readiness, improving clarity, and refining the details that make lateral work correct, balanced, and sustainable.
